Getting away from procrastination mode

Everyone procrastinates. The reasons why may differ from person to person, and depending on the situation, but EVERYONE does it. Here are a few options to consider on how to get the ball rolling:

Chunk it out: For those big projects you have on your plate, break them into smaller chunks. Of the things that need to get done, what are the baby steps that you can take to keep moving you forward? Start with one step, complete that, and then focus on the next. Celebrate the small wins as you go – it will feel great and give you consistent forward momentum.

Do the things that make you happy first: When you have a lot going on, think about which task would provide the most bang for your happiness buck, and do that first. If that puts you in a good place of feeling accomplished when it’s over, you’ll drop some of that anxiety and overwhelm and be ready to push forward to the next task.

Switch up tasks every hour or so: Instead of utilizing a large amount of time focusing on one project, break it up into hour segments to keep forward momentum on your various to-do’s. It will allow you to remain laser focused on the task at hand, and helps you not get bored and slow down.

Give yourself a treat when you hit certain milestones: I thought of my dog as I was just typing this. He’s more inclined to run out, do his business, and come back in, knowing I have a treat waiting for him when he’s done. Why not do the same? Get a task done, and buy yourself something at the mall. Or go eat some cheesecake. Or get a massage. Whatever tickles your fancy – give yourself something to work toward!
